We all know the standard investing strategies – diversify your holdings, invest in blue chip stocks, spread your risk, etc. However, some investors want to make a quick buck on the market or boost their overall portfolio returns. Those who have this desire however need a stomach for risk, though. The perfect place for these investors is in pink sheets penny stock investing.

Penny stocks are equities that are valued at around five dollars or less. Many of them have small numbers of shares outstanding, and they are subject to much more volatility. In other words, they can increase in share price very quickly, doubling and doubling again in the same day. At the same time, penny stocks can also plummet just as quickly.

This is why they are an investment for those who can tolerate high levels of risk in exchange for high levels of reward. If you get in at the right time, you can double, triple, or quadruple your money, or more, in the blink of an eye. The problem is that many investors get too greedy – they stay in too long or they get in too late. That’s when the bloodbath begins – the temporary bubble bursts, the stock falls, and investors lose nearly everything. If that’s a risk you can afford to take, then penny stocks may be for you.

One other problem with pink sheet penny stocks in particular is the attention they get from scammers. Because they are not monitored as extensively as larger cap stocks, there is more chance of malfeasance. For instance, some people stir up rumors about a stock, sending its price soaring. As the price goes up, more people get in, sending the price even further. These original liars, sometimes associated with the company that’s allegedly behind the stock, then sell their shares, making a quick buck. Eventually, the steam runs out, and all the other investors get crushed. To avoid these scams, always do your due diligence. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.
